Have you ever read the story of Jabez in 1 Chron. 4:9-10? It was a story short, sweet, and to the point. It was about a child born to a woman who is not spoken about, and all that’s known about her is that she gave birth to a boy she named Jabez.
Apparently, the birth she endured was a very painful one and that was the reason for his name, (it meant “pain, sorrow, distress”). From the sounds of it Jabez got off to a bad start in his life with that name.
In those days when he was born names and their meaning were very significant and followed that person all throughout their lives. His name placed a curse on him by the sounds of it. Can you imagine his growing up and all the teasing and scrutiny he went through all because of his name?
This innocent child burdened with the agony of the name his MaMa gave him, and it’s not that she didn’t know about the significance of one’s name and its meaning it would carry throughout life, because she as well lived amongst that culture. But,to her defense let’s just leave that alone because there is no information in the Word about this woman at all.
As Jabez grew up to adulthood it was quite apparent that he was feeling the pain of his name and wanted to be free of the curse it carried. So he cried out, cried out to the One he obviously knew in his growing up as a child. “GOD”.
Jabez cries out to God in 1 Chron.4:10 saying “Oh that You would indeed bless me and enlarge my border [property], and that Your hand would be with me, and You would keep me from evil so that it does not hurt me!” And God granted his request.
Jabez asked God to bless him, enlarge his borders (territory), to be with him, and to protect him from evil. This boy (or man) knew how to pray, ask, and believe. Coming from the lineage of David, “I bet he did”.
Jabez’s name had a terrible meaning and he could do nothing about it but what he expressed to God in prayer and that was that his name would no longer carry a curse over him, and what did we read?
“That God honored his prayer.”
That curse was broken and he didn’t have to worry about it no more, all he had to do was believe.
The outcome Jabez experienced was far better off than his beginnings that he had nothing to do with (but be born). What Satan meant for bad God turned it around for good. Genesis 50:20
But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
